Abstract
The significance of energy security and the global goal of a clean future is explored in this thesis, with a specific focus on the UAE's sustainability objectives of being reliant on renewable energy sources by 50% and 75% in 2023 and 2050, respectively. The progress made in this field by the UAE is highlighted, which is interconnected with economic, social, environment, and investment goals. Recent developments in renewable energy, specifically pumped hydro storage (PHS) technology, are examined, with a particular emphasis on Sharjah, one of the emirates in the UAE. Through case studies, cost considerations, and analysis of factors influencing renewable energy deployment, a comprehensive framework for understanding the state of sustainability and renewable energy in Sharjah is presented. Constructive strategies, policies, and guidelines are proposed to support the expansion of renewable energy in the emirate. Additionally, a feasibility study for a water storage station utilizing technological pumping as a potential solution for Khorfakkan is conducted, with costs ranging from 1.14 billion to 4.5 billion UAE dirhams. The thesis concludes with recommendations for future work, including topological surveying using geographic information systems to identify suitable sites for the pumped hydro storage project in Khorfakkan.
