Abstract
Subtitling strategies employed in rendering culture-specific items (CSIs) in Arabic movies especially religious and historical ones has been an under-researched area in Translation Studies. This study examines the subtitling strategies utilized in rendering CSIs in the English subtitles of the Arabic version of Ar-Risālah movie and assesses the quality of their renditions in terms of accuracy, intelligibility and connotative impact. Moreover, the study examines the frequency of the subtitling strategies in question to find out the possible correlations between subtitling strategies and specific thematic categories of CSIs. The study data includes numerous subtitles comprising a total of 166 CSIs which belong to various cultural categories. The data analysis, which has been conducted both quantitatively and qualitatively, is based on two working models, one for subtitling strategies and another for CSIs typology, drawn from relevant paradigms.
